Type 2 diabetes (previously known as non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes) is a disorder that affects over 20 million people in the US. Estimates from the World Health Organization say that the disease currently costs India about $250 billion per year, and that in the next ten years this figure will skyrocket to $335 billion.

As a result, the treatment of Type 2 diabetes has been believed to require a "lifetime commitment" to blood sugar monitoring and medications or insulin therapy, in conjunction with healthy eating practices and regular exercise.
